How Mercury Reacts With Aluminum Is Incredibly Fascinating

Popular YouTuber NileRed creates cool and interesting chemistry projects where he makes interesting videos about them.

In his latest video, NileRed decided to see exactly how aluminum reacts with mercury. After buying a piece of aluminum from Home Depot he then drilled a hole into the aluminum so when the mercury is added it wouldn’t slide off the plate.

Basically, when mercury is added to aluminum, it forms what is known as amalgam or more commonly, mercury alloy.

“Aluminum is normally protected by a thick oxide layer, but the formation of the amalgam disrupts it,” detailed in his YouTube description. “It allows fresh aluminum to react with air to form white aluminum oxide. As the oxide grows, it forms as these cool white fibers.”

Isn’t science awesome?!
